Air Writing is a fun way to use play-based learning.
It is simple and a low prep activity.
There is one important thing to remember when using air writing:
when you are facing another person,
the view will look reversed to them.
It is the mirror effect. Your right will be their left.
So as a teacher, when I am facing a student, and they ask how do I make a letter h?
I need to remember to turn the h backward, so they see the correct view.
For me: it is a big stick down then bump to the left.
For them: they see a big stick down and it bumps to the right. ( the correct way)
It takes a little bit of extra thought before making the letters.
One letter at a time is easy!
But when doing lots of letters, and trying to say the correct letter
sounds or letter motions at the same time, it can get a little confusing for me.
That is why this book and flashcards are so helpful.
The back cover of this book has the reverse view letters printed for reference.
The large print pages have the letter sound and letter motions printed on the page
for the teacher to read to the class as they make the letters in the air with her.
The cards are a great companion in the same way.
The correct view is printed on the front for the students to see
and the back for the card has the reversed view for the teacher,
with the letter motions printed out for instructing the students.
The pages can be cut out of the book to use as flashcards
Or download and print the flashcards from this Site.
I like to keep my cards together on a ring.
They hang on the wall in the circle time area.
It is a great way to display the letter of the week and
keep all the cards organized.
Take a look at my handwriting cards here.
The cards and pages of the book can be used in lots of creative ways,
for more play-based learning activities.
Laminate and trace.
Match with magnetic letters on a cookie sheet or a magnetic whiteboard.
* Lots more ideas in the back of the book.
Front view of the cards: for the student.
They see the correct view.
Back view of the cards for the teacher.
The letter direction is reversed right to left,
mirrored so that it will look correct to the students: Left to right.
The teacher can read the letter sound and repeat the letter
making instructions also.
This could be a fun guessing game.
Which letter am I making in the air?
Big stick angles down, Big stick slides up.
It is a ..............? V!
This book came about after many years of teaching preschool in my own classroom
and I found that other teachers in my field needed the resource also.
Lots of young learners struggle with writing their letters backwards, and
this is one way that I am trying to help be a better teacher.
I had a wonderful teachers aid in my early years of teaching, she pointed out
the air writing letters looked backwards to the class.
It helped me a lot, and I have been using this reverse view ever since.
The book has only CAPITAL letters.
Capitals only because they stay on the line and do not go below the line.
Capital letters start at the top, like an airplane flying in the air.
They are off the runway, and start writing in the air.
This simple idea might help remind children where the letters start.
It could create good writing habits, and set them up for future handwriting success.
More books and resources are on the way, keep checking my site.

Consider it PURE JOY,
my brothers and sisters,
whenever you face trials of many kinds,
